Two newborn girls were discovered in a plastic bag in a Streeterville day care center Thursday after workers found the mother covered in blood in a bathroom there.
The newborns were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital but attempts to revive them were unsuccessful, according to police.
The woman works at the day care in the 400 block of East Ontario Street and also takes a class there, according to a police report. When she missed the class Thursday, workers began searching for her and found her shortly before 6 p.m. in a first-floor bathroom and called 911.
The mother, 29, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery, police said.
In the meantime, janitorial staff began cleaning the bathroom and discovered a black garbage bag in a cabinet. Inside were the newborns, unresponsive, police said.
A Fire Department ambulance took the babies to Lurie, where hospital staff named the girls Sepia and Radical Red, according to a police report.
Cause of death was not known.
The daycare is located on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus and no day care children were involved or impacted, hospital spokesman Christopher King said in a statement.
“We are working with CPD regarding this incident and unable to comment further at this time,” King said in the statement.
Detectives were recovering video from the day care center, police said.
