BENGALURU: Two persons looking to clear their debt of Rs 2 lakh burgled a house in Kumaraswamy Layout and found Rs 2 crore cash. But their luck did not last even for a week as police managed to nab them.
Cops recovered Rs 1.8 crore cash and gold worth Rs 12 lakh from the accused — Sunil Kumar alias Tore alias Mosas, 35, of Subramanyapura and Dileep, 23, of Kebbehalli in Bengaluru Rural district.
Police said Sunil is a habitual offender facing seven burglary cases. He was jailed and met Dileep, arrested for drug peddling, in prison. They became friends and were released on bail five months ago.
They borrowed Rs 2 lakh from their friends to pay their advocates’ fee. They then decided to commit burglaries to clear their debt and make ends meet. They drove around in an autorickshaw and identified a house, belonging to architect Sandeep Lal, that was locked for a few days. They struck on March 28.
The incident came to light the next morning when Sandeep’s father Manmohan Lal visited the house. Manmohan was not aware of what had been stolen. Police registered a case without mentioning the stolen items. Sandeep arrived from Chennai and claimed he had kept Rs 2 crore in his house and it was missing. A police team headed by P Shivakumar verified CCTV footage, identified the suspects and arrested them on Tuesday.
Sandeep told police he had kept the cahs at home as he was planning to construct a building. Police deposited the cash with the treasury and informed the income tax department. The architect will now have to get it back through court.
