2 kanwarias dead in Haridwar accident, toll 8 since yatra start

HARIDWAR: Two kanwarias, both in their early twenties, died and three others sustained injuries after the two motorbikes on which they were riding collided with each other. The accident took place on the Haridwar-Delhi highway falling under the Kankhal police station on Thursday.

At least eight kanwarias have died in separate accidents in UP and Uttarakhand this yatra season based on data collated from police officials of the two states.

The victims of Thursday's mishap have been identified as Rahul Kumar (23), a resident of Kapil Vihar in Saharanpur, and Shyam Thakur (22), a resident of Sihani Gate in Ghaziabad. Soon after the accident, the three injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Divulging further details, Abhinav Sharma, senior sub-inspector of Kankhal police station, told TOI, “While no FIR has been lodged in connection with the accident, we have launched an investigation to ascertain its exact cause.”

Earlier in the week, a 75-year-old kanwaria was mowed down by an unidentified vehicle on NH-91 under Dadri police station jurisdiction on Tuesday night. On the same day, a kanwaria returning from Haridwar was killed when his bike was hit by a four-wheeler on the Delhi-Meerut highway.

Similar accidents involving kanwarias have been reported from Amroha and Muzaffarnagar as well.
