A 67-year-old woman died in a shooting that also killed a man and wounded another Tuesday morning in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

A SWAT team was deployed to the 900 block of East 79th Street as police apparently searched for the person who opened fire around 6 a.m.

The woman was found with gunshot wounds to her arm and hand, and a man was found with several gunshot wounds to his body, police said. They were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.

They were identified as Gloria Binder, 67, and Erskine Binder, 42, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. They lived in South Shore.

Another man, 55, was shot in his face and taken to the same hospital and stabilized, police said.

At the scene, the windows of a white sedan appeared to have been shot out. It was parked near the Food Town Supermarket.

Police were investigating the scene of a double homicide Tuesday morning in the 900 block of East 79th Street.

Kyana Butler lives in an apartment building at 940 E. 79th that police surrounded. She said she came down to the front door of the building around 7 a.m. and saw blood, shell casings and a baseball cap outside.

The SWAT team was just arriving and told her to return to her apartment, she said. Butler said police were going door to door, searching for the gunman.

She said she believes poor building maintenance and security led to conditions that contributed to the shooting. She said the building has no cameras, poor lighting and no lock on the front door.

“There’s a lot of things that have led to this happening. This building is a target” for people looking to commit crimes, she said. Building management couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Last month, another shooting left bullet holes in the building, she said.

On Jan. 19, two people were shot on a sidewalk near the building, according to police. A man, 19, and a woman, 46, were treated for gunshot wounds and were listed in good condition.

Police reported no arrests in either shooting.
