Bus journey fares across the North East will be capped at £2 for a single ticket for three months from the start of 2023.
The Department for Transport announced in September that the Government will subsidise bus tickets across England from January 1 2023 to March 31, 2023 so they can be capped at £2 for a single journey.
"The move will help passengers with travel costs for work, education, shopping and medical treatments over the winter months while they are facing pressures from the rising cost of living," the Department for Transport says.

According to the DfT, the average bus fare in for a three mile journey in England is over £2.80, so passengers across the country could save an average of 30% under the cap scheme. The cap ends on March 31.
The DfT adds: "The government will continue to work closely with bus operators and local authorities and consider future support to help passengers continue accessing reliable and affordable bus services after March."
Not every bus route will be subject to the £2 fare cap. But many in Newcastle, Sunderland and across the North East are. They include routes operated by Stagecoach, Go North East and Arriva.

Arriva, Stagecoach and Go North East bus routes are among those pledging that passengers will be charged no more than £2 for a single ticket between January 1 and March 31.
The discount is available on routes in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.
