2 booked in Mumbai for selling firm’s customer database

MUMBAI: Two men, employed as customer relations advisors of a subsidiary unit of an Indian multinational company, were booked for stealing the customer database and selling it to the company’s rival firm for a high commission during the Covid-19 lockdown between June 2020 and June 2021.

Bangur Nagar police have registered a case against the two suspects identified as, Yusuf Ukayi (25) and Radhe Shetty (24). The two were terminated from the job in November 2021 based on the information the company received from its client from Australia.

Ukayi and Shetty are yet to be arrested as the police are collecting more details about the fraud. The company offers end-to-end customer relationship management, IT services, and solutions.

The former employees stole private data belonging to the firm’s clients like names, date of birth, address, driving licence number, etc and sold it to an outside party during period when they were allowed to work from home.

“The duo will be arrested soon which will help us know to whom they have sold the client database and the total numbers and how much they have earned by means of commission,” said a police officer at the Bangur Nagar police station.

“Initially, the theft was committed by Ukayi for a commission. As the demand increased for more customer databases, he roped in Shetty to help him. The company learned about the data theft only when one of its clients based in Australia mailed them about it last year,” he further stated.

“We are yet to get details of the motive behind selling the customer database and how it is being misused and where. The duo's arrest will help us get more information,” said police.
