19 years to the day the Pasha Bulker ran aground at Nobbys

The Pasha Bulker ran aground at Nobbys beach in a ferocious storm on this day 19 years ago.

It was June 8, 2007, when news began spreading that a massive ship was floundering in wild seas, battling 110kmh winds and a 10-metre swell.

The 225-metre long bulk carrier was ultimately beached at Nobbys.

Stories from the storm

Crowds gathered to see the red ship for themselves as images of the Pasha Bulker were splashed across the globe. Viral photos show the vessel dwarfing Nobbys pavilion.

The crew of 22 sheltered inside the swaying ship before they were rescued by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in an extraordinary 90-minute operation.

The deadly storm and the ship that ran aground have become part of Newcastle folklore.

While the Pasha Bulker captured the world's attention, it was also a time of devastating loss.

By the end of the stormy weekend that brought the horror East Coast Low now known as the Pasha Bulker storm, nine people had died.

The Pasha Bulker was repaired and renamed. It is now known as the LH Anthea and was near South Africa earlier this month on its way to Singapore.

By coincidence, a Japanese submarine bombed Newcastle during World War II on the same day, June 8, but 65 years earlier in 1942.
