Having taught snowboarding and spent a winter in Quebec, where temperatures often dropped to -40C, I’ve learned what really matters in ski and snowboard jackets. If you want practical advice on picking the right winter sports jacket plus tested recommendations from someone with real experience, you’re in the right spot.
When buying a ski jacket, the first thing I recommend is to decide whether you need a shell jacket or an insulated one. Shell jackets are thinner, perfect to protect you from springtime snow conditions. However, insulated jackets are filled with either goose or synthetic down, and a great choice if you’re heading somewhere with regular snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. But my best advice is always, if possible, to try the jacket before you fully commit to wearing it out and about. Only by trying it on will you know if it’s comfortable and right for you.
