A £150million Government scheme launched to help families build their own homes has had just 26 applications in its first three months - and only one has been approved. The Help To Build equity loan scheme was launched on June 22 this year, with officials saying it would give thousands of families the chance to create their own property.
It is designed to help applicants in England achieve their self and custom-build dreams with just a five percent deposit needed. But despite being launched to great fanfare it has attracted a small number of applicants.
Robert Simmonds, of property buying service Shyft, said: “The Help To Build scheme was created to give families that chance to achieve their dream home without a Grand Designs-size budget. It’s aimed at applicants who are starting from scratch, perhaps needing to buy the land and fund the whole building project to its finish.
