We’re now hours away from the Eagles kicking off the 2022 preseason at home against the Jets, and there are several intriguing storylines to watch.
Philadelphia has about a dozen players who’ll likely be ruled out due to injury or rest, and the starters will only play a series or two. About 41 roster spots are seemingly locks, and about 40 rookies and veterans fighting for 12 to 13 potential spots on the 53-man roster.
With several questions needing to be answered on Friday night, we’re highlighting 15 veteran players to watch in the preseason opener.
1
Haason Reddick, LB
Reddick can’t do much in one or two series, but we’re looking for an early indication of how Jonathan Gannon will scheme the pass rush specialist.
2
Jalen Hurts
It’ll be about showing off a refined throwing motion and early anticipation on his throws for Hurts.
3
Reid Sinnett
Sinnett will see increased playing time on Friday night, and it’ll be imperative for the young quarterback to take command of the offense while displaying the ability to push the ball downfield.
4
Jason Huntley
With Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell likely to sit out, Huntley will have an opportunity for increased carries, and Friday night could provide the chance to secure a roster spot.
5
Zach Pascal
Pascal has battled food poisoning, but if he plays a series or two, it’ll be intriguing to see how his size impacts Philadelphia’s offense.
6
Noah Togiai
With Grant Calcaterra out and Dallas Goedert likely to play a series, Togiai has a chance to separate himself from J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.
7
Jalen Reagor
Reagor no longer has the pressure of facing the opposing team’s top cover man, and he should be able to dominate the Jets reserves on Friday night.
8
Sua Opeta
Opeta has improved every year since he’s been in the NFL, and a good showing could make him a potential trade option for a team looking to upgrade the offensive line.
9
Rennell Wren
Wren is at the back of a loaded defensive tackle group, and he’ll need a solid showing to keep his name in consideration for a 53-man roster spot.
10
Marlon Tuipuloto
The former USC star has cut weight and is looking to find a role in Jonathan Gannon’s versatile scheme.
11
Davion Taylor
Taylor has been somewhat lost in the shuffle behind T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White, but a good showing on Friday night can put the speedy linebacker back in the rotation.
12
Josiah Scott
A solid player looking to avoid getting lost in the shuffle at cornerback, Scott is looking to land a spot in the slot behind Avonte Maddox.
13
Kary Vincent Jr.
There is a logjam at the cornerback position, and the former LSU star will look to separate himself.
Vincent has been dealing with a groin injury.
14
K'Von Wallace
The former Clemson star must show that he can be fluid in coverage and against the run as undrafted rookie Reed Blankenship works to rise up the depth chart.
15
Jared Mayden
The former Alabama safety is looking for his place on the depth chart, and Mayden will look to overtake K’Von Wallace.
16
Andre Chachere
A converted cornerback looking to get reps at safety, Chachere will look to show that he can make plays in space while being an effective tackler.
