15 of the best-known Scottish clans, their mottos and origins

Scotland's most recognisable family names and surnames can often be attributed to many of the country's famous clans. Key players in Scotland's history and culture, their descendants have spread out all over the world.

This means you'll often find famous clan names like the Campbells, Fergusons, MacDonalds and Stewarts in countries as far afield as Canada, New Zealand and South Africa and sometimes, even further.

The word 'clann' derives from the Gaelic word for 'children' and would refer to the descendants, family and sworn arms men of a particularly powerful chief or king.

Clans, septs, kith and kin would all fall under the broad umbrella of a particular name, that could come from the leader or even the place or region that they hailed from.

With that in mind, here are some of the most famous clan names, their mottos and their meanings.
