'5,000 passengers face cancellations' from Heathrow due to luggage mountains

Thousands of customers face being grounded at Heathrow today after the airport asked airlines to cancel 10% of their flights.

In the latest sign that the travel industry is melting down, the London travel hub is attempting to significantly cut movement out of Terminals 2 and 3.

An estimated 5,000 passengers on 90 flights will be affected on Monday alone.

Airlines have been given the option of consolidating their flights at Heathrow - meaning that instead of cancelling 10% of services they could move passengers on to other flights to ensure they get away.

Passengers are advised to regularly check whether their flight is still due to depart.

Flights on Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Air France have all be cancelled so far, along with around services from around ten other airlines.

Routes affected include Athens, Paris, LA, Copenhagen and Frankfurt.

The request came at the end of a weekend in which the airport was beset with baggage problems, with a great sea of luggage allowed to build up as crews became overwhelmed.

A team of workers was brought in on Saturday to remove the bag mountain a day after it formed, with staff now working to reunite travellers with their belongings.

Bosses have reportedly blamed “technical issues” for the problem which has seen customers queueing for hours to get their luggage.

Many decided to call it quits and head home leaving their suitcases to be couriered to their address.

Frustrated passengers have taken to Twitter to express their dismay at the situation.

Elizabeth Wilkins wrote: "No ground crew to unload passengers or luggage . Two hour wait for luggage and still no sign of it.

"No sign of any staff to help or give updates! Sort it out Heathrow it’s an embarrassment!"

Alex added: "I took the flight out at 2.50pm, ended leaving Heathrow at 5.20pm. Got to my final destination, my luggage wasn’t even delivered to CDG. They’re still stuck at LHR."

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “We apologise unreservedly for the disruption passengers have faced over the course of this weekend.

“The technical issues affecting baggage systems have led to us making the decision to request airlines operating in Terminals 2 and 3 to consolidate their schedules on Monday 20 June.

“This will enable us to minimise ongoing impact and we ask that all passengers check with their airlines for the latest information.”

In other travel chaos news, easyJet has announced that its summer schedule will be cut back to 90% of its usual levels.
