14 workers die in blasts in two TN fireworks units

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Fourteen workers died in blasts in two fireworks manufacturing units near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

The first accident happened in a fireworks unit at Rengapalayam. The unit is owned by Sundaramoorthy.

Around 1.30pm, workers were testing samples of the finished crackers before packing them. Since a spark from the crackers fell in a room where workers were packing crackers, a blast was triggered. Thirteen workers died in this accident.

On being informed, fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and doused the blaze.

Virudhunagar district superintendent of police R Srinivasa Perumal visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.

In the second accident, a worker identified as Vembu,35, died in a blast in a fireworks unit at Kichanayakanpatti on Tuesday afternoon.

Expressing his condolences, chief minister M K Stalin announced a solatium of Rs 3 lakh each to the family members of the deceased workers.
