BAREILLY: Eleven people have been arrested and sent to jail for allegedly thrashing and pelting stones at some kanwariyas over playing “loud” music on speakers in Wazirganj area of UP’s Budaun.
The incident took place in Dugo village on Monday when the kanwariyas were returning on two tractor trolleys after offering Ganga water in a Gaurishankar Guladia Shiva temple in Aonla area of Bareilly, said police.
According to police, members of a particular community objected to the kanwariyas playing music on speakers, and allegedly beat them up with sticks and pelted stones at them. Sources said a huge protest was staged outside the Wazirganj police station on Monday night after some of the pilgrims got injured in the violent incident. Later at night, senior administrative and police officials visited the village and requested the residents to maintain peace, and the victims were admitted to hospital for treatment.
SP city Praveen Singh Chauhan said, "An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 149 (offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (attempt to outrage the modesty of a woman), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against 11 people. All of them have been arrested and sent to jail. The situation in the village is under control.”
