11 events taking place in Wirral to mark Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

This weekend will see a host of festivities take place in Wirral to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A total of 78 roads have been granted permission to be closed to traffic while street parties take place at various times between Thursday, June 2 and Monday, June 6. For those not attending a street party, there’s an array of larger celebrations being staged across the region to honour the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Below, we look at 11 of the events that you can enjoy in Wirral this bank holiday weekend.

Thursday, June 2:

Jubilee Beacon Lighting, Birkenhead Park

To officially get the Jubilee celebrations underway, the Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Jeff Green, will light the Beacon at the Grand Entrance Archway at Birkenhead Park at 9:45pm. There is a long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons, with the act symbolic of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents. The beacon will be lit alongside more than 2022 others across the UK and Commonwealth as part of one of the official events to mark Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign.

Multicultural Platinum Jubilee Event, Birkenhead

Wirral Change's Platinum Jubilee event will include a host of activities to get involved with, including fairground rides, Katumba drums and a circus workshop. The event will take place at Barton Road Carpark, Oxton Rd, between 11am and 3pm, with people free to turn up on the day.

Neston Ladies Club Day, Neston

Neston Ladies Club day is set to make a return this week, celebrating its 208th annual procession. Organised by the Neston Female Society, hundreds of people are expected to turn out on the parade route which terminates at the Royal British Legion on Chester Road. Participants will wear red, white and blue ribbons around their badges and children will be provided with commemorative medals in a nod to the jubilee.

Friday, June 3:

Platinum Jubilee Picnic, Eastham Village

Torr Park, in Eastham Village, will host a Jubilee picnic between 11am and 4pm, with donkey rides, WW2 singers and a Punch & Judy show all part of the entertainment. The event will even feature a Winston Churchill impersonator to kick off proceedings.

Birkenhead Street Party and Fete, Birkenhead

Equilibrium North West CIC are teaming up Options for Supported Living to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee at the Livingstone Street Play & Community Centre in Birkenhead. The community will be brought together with stalls, games, bouncy castles and entertainment to provide plenty of family fun for the bank holiday weekend.

Saturday, June 4:

Jubilee Picnic at The Priory, Birkenhead

Birkenhead Priory - the oldest standing building on Merseyside - will be providing a range of activities including meeting the Moonshine Owls, creating jewellery & crafts with beadybeady and face painting by Evey. From 11am until 3pm, there will be music from Wirral Samba and Wirral 3L’s Choir, and a chance to explore a vintage bus from the Wirral Transport Museum.

Special Afternoon Tea, New Brighton

On both Saturday and Sunday, the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton will offer a special afternoon tea, served at 12:00pm & 3:00pm. For £20 - £10 for children - people can enjoy a selection of sandwiches, cakes and pastries. There’s even the option for guests to add some prosecco to give the occasion some extra sparkle.

The Platinum Jubilee Ball, Heswall

For those wanting to celebrate the Jubilee in style, Saturday will see Heswall Hall join forces with The Mayor of Wirral to present an evening of dinner, dancing and entertainment. With tickets priced at £70, this black-tie event will feature a jubilee Cocktail created for the evening by The Blind Pig, a three-course dinner and a live band and DJ.

Sunday, June 5:

Platinum Picnic, Port Sunlight

Port Sunlight Village Trust will be celebrating the Queen’s 70 years of service with a picnic on the Museum Green, in the heart of the village. The event is free to attend and will have a live stage featuring local bands such as The Port Sunlight Sea Dogs, The Get Back Beats, and The Swing Era Jazz Band, hosted by compere Graeme White. There’ll be plenty of food on offer and the Green will also have vintage fair rides and stalls for all ages to enjoy.

The Big Jubilee Lunch, Neston

Stanney Fields Park and the newly reopened Neston Civic Hall will have an afternoon of festivities on offer. Between 2pm and 6pm, visitors can enjoy a Jubilee Bake-off competition, live entertainment and plenty of food and drink stalls to enjoy.

The Big Lunch, Birkenhead Park

People are invited to bring their own picnic, chairs and rugs to Balaclava Field, opposite the park's Visitor Centre, where they will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the 175th anniversary of Birkenhead Park.
