Single malt Scotch whisky is arguably the most rewarding spirits category to explore, but it’s also one of the most intimidating.
Once largely defined by familiar regional shorthand, from smoky Islay malts to honeyed Speyside whiskies and lighter Lowland styles, the category now feels significantly broader. There are classic age-statement bottles, experimental cask finishes, island distilleries finding their voice and independent bottlers offering characterful alternatives to the big names. There’s absolutely no shortage of choice, but not every bottle delivers.
