The Eagles released their first unofficial depth chart of the summer as the team begins preparation for a Friday night preseason matchup against the Ravens at M&T Stadium.
While it’s far from finalized, there are plenty of notable surprises at some notable positions, including safety and running back.
Most offensive and defensive starters have been known, but several key position battles and roster scenarios gained clarity after Philadelphia released a three-deep outlook for every position.
It’s unclear if Jalen Hurts will start against the Ravens, with the Eagles putting more stock in joint practice sessions, and the depth chart indicates who’d be the next man up.
With Philadelphia scheduled for a Friday morning walkthrough, here are the takeaways and observations from the first unofficial depth chart.
Tanner McKee QB3
The rookie from Stanford has outplayed Ian Book, but both players are listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart.
Saturday should provide some clarity.
RB1 gridlock
D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny have received all of the publicity, but it’s Kenneth Gainwell listed as the first running back.
All five players are listed as RB1 with Gainwell getting the nod in an Alphabetical order style listing.
WR depth
The demise of Greg Ward has been exaggerated, and he’s listed behind A.J. Brown on the outside.
Quez Watkins is listed as No. 1 wide receiver at his spot, while Joseph Ngata is listed fourth despite a strong camp.
WR longshot
Johnny King, Tyrie Cleveland and Devon Allen have some work to do.
Jurgens is king at RG
The second-year center from Nebraska is the No. 1 right guard, listed ahead of Tyler Steen.
BG is back
Brandon Graham returned to Philadelphia on a one-year deal and he’s listed as the No. 1 defensive end.
DT
Fletcher Cox and Jordan Davis were the No. 1 defensive tackles, while Jalen Carter and Milton Williams are listed with the second team.
Philadelphia will utilize a dynamic rotation and the depth chart won’t sway that.
SAM
Haason Reddick was the expected starter, but it was Patrick Johnson who got the nod over Nolan Smith on the second team.
Weakside Linebacker
Christian Elliss has arrived and he’s the No. 1 weakside linebacker opposite Nakobe Dean. Nicholas Morrow is the co-No. 1 but the competition is definitely on.
Zach Cunningham and Myles Jack are working their way up the depth chart despite seeing first team reps.
Nakobe Dean reigns Supreme
Dean is listed as the top guy in the middle, with Shaun Bradley nipping at his heels. Undrafted rookie Ben VanSumerenn could see a redshirt year on the practice squad.
Eagles CB depth a strength
James Bradberry and Darius Slay are the guys, but it is Josh Jobe and rookie Kelee Ringo at No. 2 ahead of the veteran Greedy Williams.
The slot has Zech McPhearson as the backup behind Avonte Maddox.
Reed Blankenship the man at safety
Blankenship is firmly entrenched as the starter at one safety spot, while K’Von Wallace and Terrell Edmunds are co-No. 1 at the other spot.
Sydney Brown is a work in progress.
Random notes
Britain Covey is going to make the roster as the primary punt returner, while Boston Scott can be secure in his listing as the kick returner.
Derek Barnett resumes his role as the backup edge rusher to Josh Sweat, while Janarius Robinson is listed behind Tarron Jackson.
Dennis Kelly is listed as the backup left tackle to Jordan Mailata.
