10 amazing quotes about Scotland from famous people

Scotland as a country is easy to fall in love with, thousands of visitors every year will testify to that. And it's not just Scots who love to wax lyrical about this incredible country.

In fact, over the generations, philosophers, writers, actors and politicians have all taken the time to exclaim their love for Scotland.

Everyone from famous Scots like Billy Connolly and Sean Connery and historical figures like Benjamin Franklin and Winston Churchill have been recorded gushing about this wonderful little nation.

Here are some of our favourite quotes about Scotland from famous people.

Winston Churchill – "Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind."

Voltaire – "We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation."

Benjamin Franklin – "Did not strong connections draw me elsewhere, I believe Scotland would be the country I would choose to end my days in."

Queen Victoria said in 1873 – "I feel a sort of reverence in going over these scenes in this most beautiful country, which I am proud to call my own, where I was such devoted loyalty to the family of my ancestors – for Stuart blood is in my veins."

Outlander star Sam Heughan – "Scotland is undoubtedly the star of Outlander. I’m so proud of the country and all it has to offer."

Author Julia London – "There are few places in my life that I’ve found more ruggedly beautiful than the Highlands of Scotland. The place is magical - it’s so far north, so remote, that sometimes it feels like you’ve left this world and gone to another."

The late great food and travel writer Anthony Bourdain – "Glasgow is maybe the most bullsh*t-free place on earth. I think I call it 'the antidote to the rest of the world'. It’s so unapologetically working-class and attitude-free. Everyone’s looking 'to take the piss out of you', as they put it. They’re all comedians, and tough. They don’t put on airs."

Author Diana Gabaldon finds it magical – "There’s no place on earth with more of the old superstitions and magic mixed into its daily life than the Scottish Highlands."

English TV presenter Edd China – "It doesn’t matter if it’s soggy or it’s sunny, there are so many lovely roads and awesome rugged countryside in Scotland – that’s what makes it."

The US Offce actor Rainn Wilson offered his own comedic take – "Scotland is the Canada of England!"
