Aidan O'Brien has two leading contenders as he goes in pursuit of yet another Qipco 1,000 Guineas triumph.
The Irish trainer, who has sent out five of the past six winners, relies on ante-post favourite Tenebrism, the mount of Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori's runner Tuesday.
Dettori took last year's renewal on Mother Earth, while Winter and Hermosa were two of the recent shock winners from the O'Brien camp.
As fellow Irish filly Homeless Songs misses out, waiting for the French equivalent instead, Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Discoveries is towards the head of the pack. Further spice is added by two French contenders, Group 3 Prix Imprudence winner Malavath and the Andre Fabre-trained Zellie.
James Ferguson expects Mise En Scene to show up brightly, as he prepares to saddle his first ever Classic runner at his home track. “I’ve taken her for a racecourse gallop at Chelmsford City which went as expected and we are going in full of confidence that she will run a big race and hopefully we can get the ball rolling this year for the Qatar team and hopefully win a big one," he said.
Bookmakers Betfred make Tenebrism, last seen taking the Cheveley Park at the track, their 3-1 favourite.
1,000 Guineas runner guide and latest odds
1. 2-1 Ameynah (Roger Varian/David Egan) 25-1
Impressive winner of a Rowley Mile maiden earlier this month and has bundles of scope to progress this year. Takes a huge jump in class now. Up against it.
2. 7234-1 Cachet (George Boughey/James Doyle) 16-1
Yet to finish out of the frame in four runs on the Rowley Mile, including when keeping on well to land the Nell Gwyn Stakes (7f) on return. Deserves to take her chance and likely to stay the mile fine. Overall level of form just a shade below the top level so she's vulnerable in this company.
3. 4131- Discoveries (Mrs John Harrington/Shane Foley) 11-2
Rounded off two-year-old campaign by winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes by three-quarters of a length (Homeless Songs back in 5th). Bred to stay 1m plus and should get her favoured fast ground so has to be a big player.
4. 3152-5 Flash Betty (Mick Channon/Silvestre De Sousa) 150-1
Exposed filly rated 96. Seven lengths behind Cachet in Nell Gwyn Stakes and has a mountain to climb.
5. 6415-3 Hello You (David Loughnane/Rossa Ryan) 40-1
2021 Rockfel Stakes winner at this track (7f) and finished well having missed a beat at the start when fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Only third in the Nell Gwyn on return (keen early and weakened late on) but should strip fitter and not without a squeak at big odds.
6. 212-1 Juncture (Ger Lyons/Colin Keane) 16-1
Bolted up in a 1m Listed race at Dundalk last month and looks a filly of potential this year. That form as it stands isn't enough to make her a strong contender in this much deeper company.
7. 2112-1 Malavath (Francis-Henri Graffard/Christophe Soumillon) 7-1
Talented filly whose wins have come on soft ground or worse. She showed her effectiveness on a quicker surface when flying home late to grab second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Looked good when landing Group 3 race in Deauville on return and rates a contender for top French yard.
8. 1140- Mise En Scene (James Ferguson/Cieran Fallon) 12-1
Beaten three lengths in Fillies' Mile over this course and distance. Ground probably too quick when out the back in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Needs to better any of last year's form by some way to figure but that is by no means impossible.
9. 12322- Prosperous Voyage (Ralph Beckett/Rob Hornby) 25-1
Had several of these behind when second in the Fillies' Mile. Beaten on five of her six starts last year and others have greater potential to be top class.
10. 11123- Sandrine (Andrew Balding/David Probert) 20-1
Albany Stakes and Duchess of Cambridge Stakes scorer last year. All five starts were over six furlongs and big question mark about her ability to see out a mile.
11. 11- Tenebrism (Aidan O'Brien/Ryan Moore) 3-1
Flew home up the stands' rail to land last year's Cheveley Park Stakes on just her second start and could be anything at this stage. Should stay the mile fine; open to stacks of progress this year so a must for any shortlist.
12. 2-1 Tuesday (Aidan O'Brien/Frankie Dettori) 6-1
Wonderfully bred being a sister to 1,000 Guineas winner Minding (amongst others) and although only seen once last year, she got within a short head of subsequent Moyglare winner Discoveries. No problem landing Naas maiden on return and arguably brings as much potential to the table as anything in this race.
13. 2215-1 Wild Beauty (Charlie Appleby/William Buick) 10-1
Grade 1 winner in Canada at two. Had to work pretty hard to win the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury on return although is relatively exposed. Needs to improve.
14. 1221-2 Zellie (Andre Fabre/Tom Marquand) 10-1
Trainer who won this race in 2014 didn't think that we would see the best of her until this year so it says a lot about her ability levels that she could win at Group 1 level at two (Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp in the autumn). Drying ground raises a question mark but no surprise if she was good enough for the master Andre Fabre.
Verdict
As is often the case with this race, Aidan O'Brien appears to hold the key. Tenebrism looked a bit special in last year's Cheveley Park but it's tempting to side with Galileo filly TUESDAY whose pedigree screams Guineas winner. Her sole start as a juvenile reads particularly well and last month's maiden win will have teed her up nicely for this. She could be a star in the making. Zellie is another big player.
