"007 First Light" is widely regarded as one of the best games among the media franchise's video gaming releases, and naturally, this already means a sequel is set to follow. However, a new report shares bad news about it.
While a sequel is indeed planned for the game, it could be a very long wait before the game arrives.
'007 First Light Sequel' Said to Be Very Far Away From Release
According to a report by ComicBook Gaming, the speculations around a sequel's timeline come down to IO Interactive's current situation.
The studio spent roughly five years developing "007 First Light," its longest development cycle ever, coming off a period when it was shipping "Hitman" games every two to three years.
That shift to a longer development window reflects where big-budget game production has headed across the industry broadly, and it is unlikely to shorten significantly for the next "Bond" project.
IO Interactive delivered a standout "James Bond" game that resonated with both critics and players, establishing a young Bond in a world with clear room for sequels. The studio had always planned for the character to star in multiple games.
"Hitman Classic Trilogy Remastered" is confirmed for 2027, but that is being handled externally by Saber Interactive, which frees IO Interactive's core team. The issue is that IO Interactive is currently deep into development on "Project Fantasy," its ambitious fantasy RPG that was recently dropped by Xbox as a publishing partner.
Despite that setback, IO Interactive reaffirmed it remains 100% committed to completing the project, meaning the team has no room to pivot to a Bond sequel anytime soon.
When Will '007 First Light' Sequel See Development?
The rough timeline based on speculation is not encouraging for fans hoping for a quick turnaround.
If "Project Fantasy" development takes a similar five years to "007 First Light," the earliest that project would wrap would be around 2031. That would be the point at which IO Interactive could realistically begin full production on a sequel.
If the "007 First Light" sequel also takes five years, which would track with current big-budget development realities, the game would not arrive until somewhere around 2036.
Even if the follow-up moves faster than the first game, which is not guaranteed in modern game development, a mid-2030s release still appears to be the most realistic window available.
'007 First Light' Sequel Set to be a Next-Gen Title
The timeline makes one thing fairly certain: a "007 First Light" sequel will not be a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X game.
By the mid-2030s, whatever hardware Sony and Microsoft ship next will already be well into its own lifecycle, making the sequel a next-generation title by default.
That also means the game would arrive at a very different moment in the industry. The technology gap between "007 First Light" and its sequel will likely be substantial, and the world of gaming will look quite different by then.
For fans of the first game, unfortunately, the wait is going to be long.
