Tyson Fury laid down the challenge to Anthony Joshua as the long-time heavyweight rivals engaged in a war of words after Fury’s latest comeback win.
Joshua had a front-row seat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday night as Fury ended a 16-month stint back in retirement, with the self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ easing to a unanimous decision victory over Russian Arslanbek Makhmudov.
Fury wasted no time in calling out Joshua - who turned down an invitation to join him in the ring for any sort of face-off - after the one-sided fight, which he won 120-108, 120-108 and 119-109 on the judges’ scorecards, amid the latest reports that the two Britons will finally go head to head in a lucrative super fight in the autumn.
“I want you, AJ. Anthony Joshua. Let’s give the fight fans what they want. The battle of Britain. And here’s my challenge,” Fury said as an unimpressed Joshua glared back at him from ringside.
“I, challenge you, Anthony Joshua, to fight me, the Gypsy King, next. Do you accept my challenge?
“Let’s give the fight fans what they want. Do not run from me this time. 10 years in the making. Let’s f*****g dance.
“You are next. You are getting knocked out. Believe it.
“By the way, I have dedicated this fight to my long-term friend, Ricky Hatton. May he rest in peace forever. I want to thank my lord and saviour Jesus Christ for this victory.
“I got 12 rounds against a tough opponent, a knockout specialist. That is better than a one-rounder against a bum. I just took out the number five contender in the world with ease.”

However, with an announcement seemingly imminent after earlier hints from boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh, Joshua refused to completely commit to the fight with his response as he expressed boredom with the whole saga after so many near-misses over the years.
“Tyson, you are a clout-chaser,” he fired back. “I've never had no problem getting in a ring with you. I punched you up as kids, watching you tonight I'll punch you up again.
“With all due respect, tonight is your night. You won't tell me what to do. I've been chasing you the last 10 years, when you're ready you come and see me and tell me your terms and conditions.
“I'm the boss, you work for me. I'm the landlord, remember that. You work for me.”
In a follow-up interview on Netflix, Joshua said that he would likely fight Fury, though made it clear that no deal had been agreed.
He also said he was unsure if he would seek a warm-up bout first, having not fought since knocking out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami in December and then sustained minor injuries in a serious car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
“I'll be completely honest,” Joshua said. “There's a negotiation you go through. I've sat at this table with him many times.
“In my heart I fight Tyson Fury tomorrow, especially after watching that. It's not a problem with me fighting. I'm not here to get clout, I'm here to fight. Contracts will be sent over and you'll probably see us in the ring more than likely.
“I'm not here to get in the ring and shout in somebody's face, I'm not about that. I saw what I saw and know what I've got to do when I get in the ring.
“He's the one that retired. I've been in the game, never retired. I've been standing strong the last 13 years, it's on him.
“He disappears, comes back. I'm standing strong. I'm not here to chase fame or hype. I'll fight anybody in front of me, whether it's him or the next person.

"I make the big fights. He works for me. There could be a warm-up fight. I was just in a serious incident, so I need to check out what's going on with my return to the ring.
"There's real stuff happening in my life. I'm not ducking anybody. There's real stuff I have to tend to.
“Once I'm 100 per cent, I'll be ready. I run the game. Everyone knows I run the game. It's what I do. I'm very strong. When I hit Fury, I'll hurt him bad.
“If Fury is serious, I'll see him in the ring. The ball will be in his court.
“Until the first bell goes, there is no fight. I have been here three or four times with [Deontay] Wilder and Fury. This is boring to me.
“I like his fighting style. I think he is good, but I don't think he will be able to cope with me. Based off tonight, it would be hard work for him.”
