Signs honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Tennessee highway will be relocated after Vietnam veterans objected to placing the memorial along a roadway that has long been dedicated to local service members killed in the Vietnam War.
The controversy centers on Tennessee State Route 386 in Sumner County, northeast of Nashville. The highway has been officially designated as Vietnam Veterans Boulevard since 1987, honoring the 25 Sumner County residents who died during the Vietnam War. In 2012, additional memorial signs listing the names of those fallen service members were installed along the route.
Last month, new signs identifying part of the roadway as the "Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway" were installed after the Tennessee General Assembly approved a memorial designation honoring Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was killed in September 2025 while speaking at a university event in Utah.
The placement immediately drew criticism from Vietnam veterans and local officials, who argued that adding another memorial designation to the same stretch of highway diluted the long-standing tribute to fallen soldiers.
Sumner County Commissioner Jeremy Mansfield said many veterans were upset because they believed the roadway had been reserved exclusively to honor those who lost their lives in military service. He also said veterans were not consulted before the Charlie Kirk signs were installed.
Following the backlash, officials decided to relocate the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway designation to Long Hollow Pike in Goodlettsville, another roadway in Sumner County. The legislative designation itself is not being repealed, only the location of the signs is changing.
The issue has highlighted the distinction between symbolic highway memorials and official road names. In Tennessee, memorial highway designations generally do not change a road's legal name or mailing addresses. Instead, they authorize the installation of commemorative signs recognizing a person or event.
Supporters of the move said the change respects both tributes by giving Kirk his own dedicated memorial while preserving the historical significance of Vietnam Veterans Boulevard.
State Rep. Johnny Garrett, who selected the original location, agreed to relocate the designation after concerns from veterans became public, according to local officials.
The dispute is one of several controversies surrounding efforts to memorialize Kirk following his assassination. Across several states, proposals to name roads, parks and public landmarks after the conservative commentator have generated both support and opposition, reflecting the deeply polarized views surrounding his political legacy.
For Vietnam veterans, however, local leaders emphasized that the disagreement was less about Kirk himself than about preserving the unique meaning of a highway dedicated nearly four decades ago to service members who never returned home.
With the relocation now agreed upon, officials expect the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway signs to be installed on Long Hollow Pike, while State Route 386 will continue serving as Vietnam Veterans Boulevard, maintaining its longstanding tribute to Sumner County's fallen Vietnam War heroes.
