Nintendo has announced a brand new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom amiibo, featuring Link's new design for the game.
The first Nintendo Direct of the year aired last night and finished with a bang, showing off a brand new trailer for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. A Collector's Edition was also revealed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch game, as well as a brand new amiibo for Zelda fans to spend all of their money on (no judgement, I’m one of them).
At the moment nowhere seems to have pre-orders up for the amiibo or the collectors edition, but we will update our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom pre-order guide once they go up.
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom amiibo functionality
The Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom amiibo will unlock extra content in-game, and even your old Zelda amiibo can be used with it to get some goodies. This is in line with Breath of the Wild, where scanning the various Zelda amiibo lets you unlock costumes and weapons. For example; if you scan the Zelda 30th Anniversary Skyward Sword Link amiibo, Link can don the outfit from that game, as well as wielding the Goddess Sword, and getting access to an assortment of random items like rupees and arrows.
But there is one new aspect to the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom amiibo functionality and that’s the paraglider fabric. Links glider wasn't customisable in Breath of the Wild, but scanning Zelda amiibo in Tears of the Kingdom will unlock an array of different designs for it this time around.
So far Nintendo has only revealed four of the paraglider fabrics unlocked with each amiibo and you can check out what they look like below:
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Link – a brown and blue fabric in line with his default look in the game
Zelda: Breath of the Wild Link Rider – a brown fabric inspired by the hood the Link amiibo wears
Skyward Sword HD Zelda and Loftwing – a fabric inspired by the sailcloth seen in Skyward Sword
Majora’s Mask Link – a fabric adorning the face of Majora
While no other fabrics have been revealed we can speculate on some others. I would assume the Wind Waker Link and Zelda amiibo would unlock Link’s pyjamas design, or maybe the Deku Leaf glider from that game. Or that the Twilight Princess Link amiibo could unlock a fabric inspired by Wolf Link.
Both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and its amiibo will launch on May 12, 2023 and pre-orders for the game are open now.
