Zara introduces new charges for Irish customers on bags and envelopes

Irish Zara customers are set to be faced with a new charge from Monday as the company invests in environmental initiatives.

It comes as the retailer is introducing a fee for paper bags and envelopes here.

The new charge will see customers have to pay 15 cents for a paper bag and 25 cents for each envelope they use from now on.

The move comes as the store hopes to encourage its customers to use reusable bags when shopping.

It said the money would then be reinvested in social and environmental work.

A notice in Zara stores read: "Please note that from 23rd May 2022, ZARA will be charging 15 cents for each of our 100% recycled paper bags and 25 cents for each envelope.

"The equivalent value of the proceeds will be fully invested in social and environmental initiatives.

"We encourage you to bring a reusable bag when shopping with us.

"Thank you for your cooperation and helping us to reduce waste."

The news comes after, earlier this month, Zara announced that people wishing to return any unwanted items to the store will now be charged €1.95.

Zara customers could previously return items for free to the retail company by bringing it to the post office or drop off point.

Zara's policy said: "You can return your order at any Zara store free of charge in the same market/region where you made the purchase.

"You only have to present the purchase receipt along with the items you wish to return. You can keep it on your mobile phone, print it out or show your ZARA QR, which you will find by going to the "Purchases" section of the ZARA app.

"Remember that you do not need to make a return request via the website or the app for in-store returns.

"Bear in mind that if you cannot make it to a physical store yourself, you can allow someone else to go for you."
