YouTuber Mykhailo Polyakov faces prison risk after illegal North Sentinel Island entry and contact attempt with tribe

A travel YouTuber is now in serious legal trouble after a risky visit that has shocked many people. Mykhailo Polyakov is facing up to five years in prison after Indian authorities said he entered a restricted tribal area without permission. The case is linked to his 2025 visit to North Sentinel Island, a place where outsiders are strictly not allowed.

According to officials, Polyakov not only reached the island but also tried to make contact with the Sentinelese tribe. He reportedly left a coconut and a can of Diet Coke near the shore. This act has raised serious concerns because the tribe is known to avoid all outside contact. The situation became public after Indian police confirmed his movements and later detained him.

Mykhailo Polyakov North Sentinel Island visit raises serious concerns under Indian tribal protection laws

The island he visited is home to the Sentinelese tribe, one of the most isolated communities in the world. The Indian government has made strict rules to protect them. No outsider is allowed to go near the island, mainly to keep the tribe safe from diseases and unwanted contact.

Investigators say Polyakov planned this trip for months. He reportedly filmed parts of his journey and even tried to get the tribe’s attention by using a whistle. After that, he left the items on the shore before returning. Two days later, he was detained. Officials used travel records and video proof as part of their case.

The report was also covered by Dexerto, which said the global group Survival International strongly criticized the act. Its director, Caroline Pearce, said, “reckless and idiotic,” warning that such actions can put both the visitor and the tribe in danger.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. In 2018, John Allen Chau was killed after trying to reach the island. Before that, in 2006, two fishermen also lost their lives after getting too close. These past events show why the rules are so strict.

India has a law called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation. Under this law, entering such protected areas without permission is a serious crime. It can lead to jail time and fines. Authorities say the law exists not just for safety but also to respect the tribe’s way of life.

Polyakov’s case is still ongoing, and his next court hearing is set for April 29. For now, the situation has once again reminded people why some places in the world must be left alone.
