Youth killed over playing of music during Jagadharti puja immersion in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A young man was killed after being allegedly attacked with a pair of scissors during the Jagadharthi Puja immersion procession in the eastern part of Chingrighata, Kolkata, over a dispute related to playing music, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night, prompting a mob to seize the accused from police custody on Sunday morning. The mob proceeded to assault the accused and staged a protest on the EM Bypass near Chingrighata crossing. Sujit Bose, the local MLA and state Fire Services minister, rushed to the scene and calmed the protesters.

The mob also threw bricks at a police team that arrived to rescue the accused, according to police sources.

A senior officer from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate stated, "The incident happened late Saturday night when the accused stabbed Saheb Ali Sardar (22) in his neck with a scissor following a fight over playing of music during Jagadharthi Puja immersion. We have arrested the man, and the necessary investigation is ongoing. The weapon has been seized."

Regarding Sunday's protest, the officer mentioned a "misunderstanding" that was resolved with assurances from Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Gaurav Sharna. He explained, "The locals hurled stones at our colleagues who went there to pacify them and bring the situation under control, and in the process, a few of them were injured. A huge police force is deployed in the area."
