Your Parent Dies With Credit Card Debt — Do You Have to Pay It?

credit card debt after death
Children generally don’t become responsible for a parent’s credit card debt simply because the parent dies. Valid debts are typically handled through the estate, although joint accounts and other exceptions can change the rules. PeopleImages/Shutterstock

Losing a parent is difficult enough without a credit card company calling about a balance you didn’t create. Yet families sorting through a parent’s finances can encounter statements showing thousands of dollars in unpaid credit card debt, sometimes before they’ve even figured out what assets are in the estate. The good news is that children generally don’t inherit a parent’s debts simply because they’re related to the person who died. Instead, credit card debt after death is typically handled through the deceased person’s estate, and creditors may have to accept a loss if the estate doesn’t have enough money. There are exceptions, however, and knowing where your responsibility begins and ends can keep grief from turning into an unnecessary financial mistake.
