Your Ex Wants to Be Friends — When Is That Actually a Bad Idea?

Your Ex Wants to Be Friends: When Is That Actually a Bad Idea?
A friendship with an ex works best when both people accept the breakup, respect new boundaries, and stop expecting romantic commitment from each other – Shutterstock

Your ex wants to stay friends, and suddenly a breakup comes with a new decision: whether to keep someone in your life who once occupied an entirely different place in it. Friendship can work after a relationship ends, but good intentions do not automatically make the arrangement healthy. Sometimes an ex genuinely values the connection. Other times, friendship offers a comfortable way to avoid loneliness, soften the breakup, or keep a romantic door slightly open.

The difference rarely shows up in the invitation itself. It shows up in what happens afterward. Pay attention to the boundaries, the expectations, and how you feel after each interaction. Those details can reveal whether friendship offers something worthwhile or simply extends a relationship that has already ended.
