Your Boyfriend Wants to Split Everything 50/50 but Makes $50,000 More — Is That Fair?

Your Boyfriend Wants to Split Everything 50/50 but Makes $50,000 More — Is That Fair?
A 50/50 bill split requires equal dollar contributions, but a proportional arrangement adjusts shared expenses to reflect each partner’s income and financial circumstances – Shutterstock

Your boyfriend earns $50,000 more than you, but he still wants you to split every bill down the middle. Rent, groceries, utilities, weekend trips: the expectation stays the same, even though your paychecks look very different. That arrangement might feel perfectly fair to him, but it could leave you with far less money for savings, emergencies, and personal spending.

The disagreement isn’t necessarily about who loves whom more or whether one partner should support the other. It’s about what fairness actually means when two people have different financial resources. A 50/50 split gives each person the same dollar amount to pay, but it doesn’t necessarily give both people the same financial breathing room.
