Youngsters at a Lanarkshire school are settling into a new building which opened its doors for the first time this term.
Pentland School has moved from its previous Townhead base to new premises at the St Ambrose and Buchanan high schools campus in Coatbridge.
The school has moved from its previous Tay Street home to its new building, constructed as part of a wider programme of investment in additional support needs facilities across North Lanarkshire.
It is described as a “modern, high-quality learning environment for all pupils”, with head teacher Laura McFarlane telling how pupils and staff were “absolutely thrilled” to enter their new space.
She said: “It will give us access to some of the fabulous facilities within the wider campus, such as the joint playing fields; we’ll be able to build stronger links with Buchanan and St Ambrose high schools, as well as having easier access to the nearby Skills Academy.
“This is just the start of a new chapter in the history of our school and we are keen to involve pupils and parents/carers in future developments.”
The move forms part of the creation of the council’s new “We Aspire College”, which brings together three existing schools which will retain their own identities while working together and moving to upgraded premises – with Portland School being accommodated at the Skills Academy on the Coatbridge campus, while Fallside School moves into the same building as Coltness High.
Education convener Angela Campbell visited Portland as the school opened the doors of its new premises and said: “It’s wonderful to hear about the pupils being so excited to be there on their first day.
“We have worked closely with the school to ensure that the new building provides the best possible opportunities for our pupils, and I’m confident that it will help to support their learning and development.”
