Youngsters asked to name buses for Dumfries to Edinburgh service

Bus passengers can expect a wacky name or two for the new vehicles that will be serving the saved Dumfries-Edinburgh service.

Houston’s Coaches have set up a fun competition for youngsters to come up with names for their three new buses that will be introduced in the next four to five weeks.

The Lockerbie-based firm saved the day by taking over from Stagecoach West Scotland to ensure the continuity of the 101/102 Dumfries to Edinburgh bus route. The wheels are now in motion for the three buses to be given nicknames in a contest that closes on June 12.

Lorilee Kirkpatrick, of Houston’s Coaches, said: “In conjunction with Scottish Bus Week (May 22-28), we started a competition to name the three new buses.

“We’ve had a good few name suggestions come in already – and some of them are definitely a bit quirky.”

Houston’s have been promoting the competition on social media, while the company’s drivers have also been handing out entry forms.

Campaigners who fought to save the bus route from the axe – Stand Up For Our Buses – have also been involved in promoting the contest.

In 2021, Dumfries and Galloway Council ran a similar campaign for school pupils to come up with name suggestions for their new fleet of bin lorries and some of those adopted included Trash Gordon and Bin Diesel.
