A woman was attacked by an angry bison before being thrown 10ft in the air.
The 25-year-old from Ohio, US, was visiting a national park in Wyoming when she was tossed in the air by the huge beast.
The woman approached the female bison on Monday morning in Yellowstone National Park after it came close to a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin, the park said in a statement.
Park regulations state visitors must stay more than 25 yards away from bison, but said the woman came within 10ft of the animal.
Two other individuals were also within 25 yards of the same bison, but it is unclear if they were also attacked.
After approaching the animal, the woman was gored and tossed into the air, suffering a puncture wound and other injuries.
Emergency services rushed to the scene instantly and took the woman to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Centre via air ambulance. She suffered a puncture wound among other injuries in her encounter with the bison.
The incident remains under investigation.
This is the first reported incident in 2022 of a visitor getting too close to the animal and the bison responding to the threat by attacking the individual, but there have been multiple similar incidents in previous years, some fatal.
Bison, which can weigh up to 2,000lb, have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal in its history, with the park warning the animals are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.
The park has reminded visitors to stay more than 25ft away from all large animals such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
