Young, pregnant and desperate: Aid cuts risk Mozambique’s teen pregnancy fight

Mozambique has been trying to deal with a youth pregnancy crisis - (Julio Dengucho/UNICEF Mozambique)

Amina Chauvinga* was chased away from home in the impoverished province of Nampula, northern Mozambique by her parents at the age of 15 after she fell pregnant with a 28-year-old man.

Stranded and out of choices, Amina moved in with the father of her unborn child, but that did not last. “The difficulty I had was that my parents could not support me as they actually sent me away from home so the only solution I could find at the time was to go after the man who got me pregnant and to live with him even though that was also difficult,” Amina says.
