Young man seriously ill in hospital after reported 'fight' outside village pub in Corbridge

A young man is understood to be seriously ill in hospital following a 'fight' outside a village pub in Northumberland.

An assault reportedly occurred outside the Golden Lion pub in Corbridge just before 10.45pm on Saturday night. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and an area outside the premises on Hill Street was cordoned off by officers.

An injured male was taken to hospital by ambulance. A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said: "We were called to reports of a male injured in Hill Street, Corbridge, at 22:43pm last night. We dispatched one ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic and a doctor, and transported one patient to hospital for further treatment."

A number of residents in the village have reported how a fight had occurred. The male is understood to currently be in intensive care.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard there was quite a lot of police there this morning and I heard there was a fight. I have heard that someone is seriously quite poorly in hospital. It's quite scary because we live in the market place. You don't expect these things to happen in the place where you live."

A man, who did not wish to be identified, said: "I heard there was a scuffle near the Golden Lion and there was a terrible fight."

A female, who lives near the pub, said: "I took the dogs out at around half 11 and I heard an ambulance. You usually get the crowds leaving and shouting but I didn't hear any of that like I usually do at night time. It's a nice area, it's really chilled. It's strange that something happened but I hope everything is alright. I feel bad for whoever it involves."

Another local female said an assault had occurred outside the Golden Lion pub. She added: "The outside (of the pub) was cordoned off this morning by police. I don't know when it got taken down but the pub's open now."

The Golden Lion did not want to comment on the incident. Chronicle Live has contacted Northumbria Police for more information.
