Young man becomes Canberra's first road fatality for 2023 after collision between truck and car in Belconnen

A man in his early 20s has become the ACT's first road fatality for 2023.

At 7am, ACT police were called to a serious crash between a concrete pumping truck and a blue Hyundai Getz on William Hovell Drive, 500 metres west of Coppins Crossing.

Officers said the young adult male driver of the Hyundai died at the scene.

The condition of the driver of the concrete pumping truck was assessed before he was taken to Calvary Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The road was then closed for several hours between Drake Brockman Drive and Coppins Crossing.

Acting Inspector for Road Policing Travis Mills said the major collisions team was continuing to investigate the incident.

"The early inquiries suggest that the blue Hyundai Getz crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and had a head-on collision with the concrete pumping truck," he said.

Police are calling for anyone in the area at the time of the crash to contact Crime Stoppers.
