A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in northern Gaza as a young girl, Ghazal Masoud, was miraculously rescued alive after being trapped under rubble for hours following an Israeli airstrike that destroyed her home. The rescue operation, which lasted six hours, involved the use of 'primitive' tools and chisels, as reported by Gaza's Civil Defense.
Tragically, at least 12 members of Masoud's family lost their lives in the airstrike that struck near Al-Fakhoura school in Jabalya, a location housing displaced individuals, according to the family and aid workers.
Describing the harrowing ordeal, Masoud's grandmother, Umm Mohammad, recounted how she pleaded with rescue workers to return and save her granddaughter. She shared the heart-wrenching moment when she heard Masoud's voice from beneath the rubble, not knowing the fate of her father and siblings.
Plight of Jabalya Refugee Camp
The tragedy in Jabalya is emblematic of the relentless bombardment the refugee camp has endured over the past 19 days since the commencement of Israel's latest offensive. The toll is staggering, with over 770 fatalities and 1,000 injuries reported in the camp, as per the Government Media Office in Gaza. Thousands more have been displaced.
Israeli military efforts in Jabalya have included the evacuation of over 20,000 individuals in the past 24 hours, along with the arrest of 150 individuals deemed as 'terrorists' in a bid to combat Hamas. However, the exact number of evacuees remains unverified.
Brig. Gen. Elad Goren, overseeing the IDF's civil-humanitarian operations in Gaza, asserted that the remaining population in Jabalya has received adequate assistance and food, prompting their evacuation to Gaza City. Contrary to this claim, international aid organizations and the Gaza health ministry have refuted the assertion, highlighting the dire shortage of medical supplies and food in northern Gaza for nearly three weeks.
