Young entrepreneur to launch brown lemonade ice cream favour to bring back memories for NI folk

An entrepreneur is hoping to bring back memories for Northern Ireland folk with her launch of a new brown lemonade flavour ice cream.

Bethany Boyd (22) from Co Tyrone set up her flourishing Betty’s Ice Cream business last year and the new flavour is set to come out later this month.

With a launch event set to take place at the Belfast barge, Bethany says she hopes the new product will rekindle a little nostalgia for those around these parts.

“We’re all about working with the consumer and if they have an innovative idea of a flavour then we try and make that happen,” Bethany told Belfast Live.

“Brown lemonade was a big thing in industrial Belfast, especially within the shipyards because after alcohol was banned, brown lemonade was brought in for the workers so that they would stay sober.

“It’s a unique flavour and I was a wee bit shocked whenever I got a text to say that we were going to try it.

“My first thought was to buy a bottle of brown lemonade and pour it into a mixture but that just wasn’t going to work.

“I had to look into what went into the drink itself and see what I could pull out in order to make it.”

Bethany is still a student at CAFRE studying all things food and drink, making her ice cream at the family farm in Pomeroy, and will be bringing her new creation in front of industry heavyweights.

She added: “It will be launched at an event where industry people who potentially might buy it will be coming along, so they’ll be the first to taste it.

“We are hoping from the event that some shops and restaurants will pick up on it.

“If there is enough scope on it we may well make it here on the farm in Pomeroy and put it on our website as well.”
