A prisoner threw a series of punches at a prison officer because he wanted to be on a different wing. Kallum Mills from Newport struck the officer to the head on September 13 last year in Bridgend's Parc prison.
Prosecutor Robert Reid told Cardiff Magistrates' Court: "[The prison officer] was working as a custody officer and was of two years' experience. He was patrolling the landing in the wing and he directed the defendant and another prisoner to return to their cells, having collected their food at lunchtime. He thought that was the end of the episode but the next thing he knew, he felt one blow to the back of his head and then a second. He span around and saw the defendant standing behind him, about to throw a third punch."
Mills, who was serving a sentence for drug and driving offences, brought the officer to the floor and attempted to deliver further punches as they struggled. Eventually other prison officers arrived on the scene and gained control of Mills. As they carried the 20-year-old to his cell he tried to kick the officers. The victim was left with bruising to his head although he did not need medical attention.
