Young boy left with broken leg in hospital after 300ft plunge on Scots hill

A six-year-old has suffered a fractured leg after falling around 300ft down the side of a steep hill in the Scottish Highlands.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Fyrish Hill, near Alness, at around 6pm on Sunday following reports that the child and a 29-year-old man had been hurt.

A HM Coastguard rescue helicopter was sent to help Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team as they tried to reach the stricken casualties.

Due to the tricky terrain, the boy was stretched down hill before being airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

A man, who fell alongside the child, suffered minor injuries as was able to walk off the hill to a waiting ambulance with the help of rescuers.

Sharing pictures of the daring rescue, the mountain rescue team said: “Full team callout last night on Fyrish to come to the aid of a fallen man and child.

“The team along with Rescue 151, the Coastguard, Police Scotland and a Scottish Ambulance Service PIT team working together came to the aid of the two casualties, who had fallen about 300ft down the southside of Fyrish.

“The casualties were located, treated and with the boy having sustained a fractured leg in the fall, he was packaged and placed onto a stretcher.

“Due to the terrain, rescue 151 couldn’t up lift him.

“The team then rigged up a lowering system and he was lowered to a forestry track before being stretchered to the waiting rescue 151 down at Novar farm.

“The male sustained less serious injuries and was able to be walked off the hills to a waiting ambulance.

“Great interagency collaboration to help bring this incident toa quick and happy conclusion.

“We wish both casualties a speedy recovery.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 6.45pm on Sunday, 27 February, to a report of a 29-year-old man and a six-year-old boy falling on a cliff near the Fyrish monument, Evanton, Alness.

“Emergency services, including the Coastguard, the Scottish Ambulance Service and mountain rescue, attended and both were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.”
