Young boy in hospital with facial injuries after fall at Rhondda Powerhouse

A 10-year-old is in hospital after falling at a disused colliery building. Emergency services were called to the building, known as the Powerhouse, at the old Glamorgan Collliery on Wednesday (May 18) evening.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said that officers attended along with fire officers and paramedics "following an incident involving a child" at around 5.30pm. He added: "The 10 year-old boy suffered facial injuries following a fall at a disused building in Llwynypia."

The boy was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment, and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing. A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at approximately 17.50pm on Wednesday 18 May, 2022, to an incident in the Llwynypia area of Tonypandy.

“We sent an emergency ambulance to the scene, where the crew were supported by colleagues from the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team as well as the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. One patient was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.”

The building was a focal point during the miners' strikes of 1910 and a vital building at the Glamorgan Colliery, but for decades it has been derelict. In March of this year, it was announced that the Grade-II listed building was going under the hammer for a guide price of £55,000. It has been marked as sold but no details of the new owners have yet been revealed.
