A baggage handler was fatally scalped after she got her hair tangled in a luggage conveyor during a freak workplace accident.
Jermani Thompson had been working at the New Orleans International Airport when she got her hair caught in the transporter on August 30 as she unloaded a Frontier Plane that had just landed.
Whilst it isn’t clear the specifics of how the 26-year-old got it caught, the horrific accident led to her death.
She was rushed to hospital following the incident at 10:20pm, according to Detective Brandon Veal, a spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, but she tragically passed away soon after.
She had been working on the apron, the area where an aircraft is loaded and unloaded, refuelled, boarded and where maintenance is carried out.
Her body was identified by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.
Known as "Jerm" to loved ones, she was a former college basketball player and huge fan of the sport.
Angela Dorsey spoke out following her daughter’s tragic death, Fox8Live reported , she said: “I just can’t believe it, you know, my only daughter is gone.
"I don’t believe it. It’s like, she just told me I see you when I come back.
“My daughter was a good child, she was a loving child, she was a child that made friends anywhere,”.
"She was the sweetest person. She was a hard worker who always went after her goals," Jermani’s sister-in-law, Nichole Branch told Nola .
"She went to work one morning and never made it home. This is just so unreal right now."
Frontier Airlines, Louis Armstrong International Airport of New Orleans, and GAT Airline Ground Support, her employee, have been approached for comment.
