'You're not welcome!': Rishi Sunak heckled as he enters Conservative Party conference

RISHI Sunak was welcomed to the Conservative Party conference by a heckler with a megaphone.

Footage captured by GB News showed the Prime Minister’s Range Rover pulling up to the Manchester Central conference centre.

However, a heckler can be heard telling Sunak that he was “not welcome” in the city.

Over a booming megaphone,  he could be heard saying: “Sunak! You’re not welcome in Manchester. The Conservatives, the self-servatives, have trashed the north of England, they’ve trashed the NHS.

“What are you doing here? Trashing the United Kingdom. No one voted for you, Sunak.

“Call that election now. Even your party doesn’t want you!”

It is a predictably cool reception following Sunak’s refusal to state whether or not the HS2 project will reach Manchester amid rumours the UK Government is set to scrap the project.

Appearing on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he repeatedly refused to assure people in the north that the project would go ahead.

“I’m not going to comment on all this speculation,” he said.

“We’ve got a project, we’ve got spades in the ground and we’re getting on with it.”

Many leaders in northern cities such as Leeds and Manchester will be furious if the project is dropped, highlighting that billions of pounds of investment will have been lost on land that has lain dormant for years since being earmarked for the HS2 development.

However, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has said it would be “crazy” not to review the project due to the spiralling costs.

In 2015, bosses of the HS2 project said there was “no business case” for extending the line to Scotland.
