If you’ve spent the better part of your adult life waiting for your Hogwarts acceptance letter (ME!) we have good news: Sydney is about to get a massive dose of wizarding world chaos this weekend.
To kick off the annual Back to Hogwarts celebrations, HBO Max and Australia Post are taking over the Sydney GPO at Martin Place on Saturday, August 29 to Sunday, August 30 and transforming it into a real-life Harry Potter Owl Post experience. Yes, an iconic piece of Sydney architecture is drinking a little polyjuice potion.

What’s happening at the Harry Potter Owl Post experience?
The centrepiece of the whole activation is a massive letter swarm like the one in that iconic scene when thousands of letters fly out of the fireplace. You can literally pose amidst a flurry of suspended Hogwarts envelopes and share it straight to IG. Aside from the grid-worthy photo ops, you can also put quill to paper and seal it with the official wax seal.
Wait, why is this happening now?
It’s all part of the lead-up to global Back to Hogwarts Day on September 1, but Warner Bros. Discovery is also using the moment to drop some pretty major franchise news. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is coming back to Australian theatres for its 25th anniversary, and will feature 12 minutes of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage.
Plus, the brand-new HBO Original TV series adaptation of Philosopher’s Stone is officially landing on HBO Max this Christmas.
For fans celebrating from home, Australia Post will have a downloadable letter-writing template on its website (here), ensuring everyone can share the magic of Back to Hogwarts.
