‘You can give up certain products’: Trump tells Americans to face up to owning less, deny your kids toys

Throughout 2024, Donald Trump promised a new golden age for the United States if he were re-elected to the presidency. He insisted that prices would begin falling the day he stepped back into the Oval Office and that it was – finally – time to actually Make America Great Again.

So uh, anyone out there feel like America is currently “Great”? Inflation is spiking, grocery prices are skyrocketing, industry is in meltdown, and the government has stopped publishing economic data.

Now, in something of a change of tack, Trump has told Americans they’re going to have to “give up certain products”. Yup, in language that sounds more like a Communist leader than the President of the United States, Trump is urging you to be happy owning nothing:

“You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don’t need that many. You always need steel. You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. You don’t need 37 dolls.”

Will Trump lead by example? Well…

Naturally, we should assume that Trump himself will lead by example on this. After all, it’s only fitting that the man currently stuffing the White House with tasteless gold gee-gaws and constructing a $300 million gilded ballroom is going to realize that materialism should be avoided.

Or… perhaps not. We somehow doubt that the children of the Trump dynasty will be told they need to settle for “2 or 3” dolls this Christmas. The reality is that these commandments aren’t for Trump and his ilk, but for the likes of you and me.

He’s happy to squat in his tasteless and opulent golden surroundings, with servants catering to his every whim and fancy while the rest of the nation tries to figure out how they’re going to afford a Christmas turkey.

Perhaps Trump needs a history lesson on what happens when the fabulously rich tell their miserable citizens, “let them eat cake” and then retreat to their walled palaces?
