Police have launched an investigation after a dog was stabbed to death in a “distressing” incident.
The disturbing attack occurred at an address in Orchard Park in Hull, with the RSPCA also launching a probe.
The dog killed is understood to be a Yorkshire terrier, according to the Hull Daily Mail.
A woman has since been arrested in connection with the incident.
An RSPCA spokesperson said: “The RSPCA received a report of a distressing incident involving a dog which was stabbed to death in Hull.
“We are now looking into this, however, we cannot discuss incidents about specific people and what action may have been taken.
"We understand how frustrating that is for animal lovers but releasing information could prejudice a future prosecution or could lead to us being fined.
“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.”
The Government introduced tougher prison sentences last year for animal cruelty, with the maximum sentence for the worst offences rising from six months to five years.
It came after a public consultation in 2017 uncovered huge support for tougher sentences for people who abuse animals.
Offenders can also receive an unlimited fine and could receive a lifetime ban from owning pets.
The Standard has contacted Humberside Police for further comment.
