Yorke sets ALM bar high for Bulls

Macarthur FC coach Dwight Yorke already has one trophy in the cabinet but he's set his sights on challenging for the A-League title on the back of defensive strength.

The Bulls host Adelaide United on Sunday after a scoreless draw with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium in the season opener.

Macarthur won the Australia Cup title in the pre-season but the former Manchester United star said that was a stepping stone towards a bigger prize.

"We are here to win it. That has always been the mentality," Yorke told reporters.

"We finished seventh (last season) and we want to finish in the top four to give ourselves a chance. That has to be the goal.

"I have inherited a great bunch of guys, really unbelievable players. They have just got to trust the process. We are only going to get better.

"We are still implementing our style, our method and our philosophy and players are getting used to it. There is still work to be done."

The Bulls scored 19 goals in their Australia Cup campaign and only conceded two. It was the clean sheet that impressed Yorke most against the Roar.

Goalkeeper Filip Kurto and left-back Ivan Vujica were outstanding, and Yorke said he "could not fault" his defensive unit which has served him so well to date.

Winger Daniel Arzani, who impressed as a 19-year-old for Australia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and is hoping to force his way into the Socceroos squad for the coming World Cup in Qatar, was substituted by Yorke in the 60th minute.

While Arzani was impressive in attack, Yorke's reason for benching him highlighted the value he places on defence.

"Defensively he wasn't doing what we were asking him to, and as a manager even with your best players on the pitch you have to got to make those tough calls and I made a call to benefit the team," he said.

Yorke said the Bulls would be able to re-set when hosting Adelaide as the jubilation of winning the Australia Cup fades.

"It is my job to get them back (focused) as quickly as possible," he said. "If we can get a point (against Brisbane) despite not being at our best then I will take it every day of the week."
