The assassination of John Lennon is among the most publicised events of the 21st century.
On December 8, 1980, Mark David Chapman shot Lennon multiple times as he left his New York apartment. At the time, John Lennon was married to Japanese artist Yoko Ono and had a son, Sean Lennon.
For almost 40 years, Ono kept silent about the day of her husband's death- with fears of being vilified by Beatles fans at the front of her mind. However, in an interview several years ago, she shared the details of her last moments with the former Beatle.

Speaking on Desert Island Discs, Ono revealed the last conversation she had with her late husband. She said: "I said ‘shall we go and have dinner before we go home?’ and John said ‘No, let’s go home because I want to see Sean before he goes to sleep’.”
Yoko was also asked if John had said anything after he had been shot, to which she replied quietly "no". Also in the interview, Yoko shed some light on life being married to one of the biggest names in the world.
She believed that she would only ever be seen as "the wife of an ex-Beatle".
Lennon was pronounced dead at around 11.15pm on the day of the shooting, having been rushed to Roosevelt Hospital in a police car.
