“Yes, we’re beginning to look into port options”: critically acclaimed Sword of the Sea could be heading to Xbox

A figure surfing on a board rides a blue wave against an orange sky in a dynamic video game scene, titled "Sword of the Sea.".

Sword of the Sea was released back in August 2025 for both PlayStation 5 and PC, and the game was met with critical acclaim.

With an 88 on Metacritic, many praised its visuals and gameplay. Over on Steam, it currently sits at “Very Positive,” with users calling it a relaxing experience to unwind after work.

For those unfamiliar, Sword of the Sea centers around a sword at sea. No, I kid, well, kind of kid, but you do ride a sword and surf across waves of sand and water.

It’s an adventure-driven exploration experience, and it may look familiar to those who played Abzu.

As you likely know, the game skipped an Xbox release when it first launched. However, in a new post on X (formerly Twitter), developer Giant Squid responded to a fan asking if Xbox was a possibility.

Their response was simple: “Yes, we’re beginning to look into port options soon.

It’s a straightforward answer, and one that strongly suggests an Xbox version could arrive at some point.

For those already invested in the game, the developers also addressed the possibility of a physical release. However, Giant Squid tempered expectations, stating: “We’d love to do a physical release in the future! Right now we’re focused on recouping development costs.”

Alongside a potential Xbox release, it would also be great to see the game land on Nintendo Switch, if possible. It feels like a natural fit for a platform like that.

Hopefully, Giant Squid can recoup development costs and continue building on what they’ve created here, because Sword of the Sea looks like the kind of experience that deserves a wider audience.

I’m always a big fan of indie games, so I thought I’d shine a little spotlight here. Hopefully, this brings more attention to the game and lets Xbox users know what to expect, and whether it might come to the platform or not.
