Year-on-year employment figures in Monklands continue to rise

The number of people in work in Monklands continues to rise year-on-year.

For a third consecutive month alternative claimant counts (ACCs) were down across the area, with Airdrie & Shotts' 2267 claims in February - a reduction of 1418 on 12 months earlier.

And neighbouring Coatbridge, Chryston &Bellshill saw 2056 claims made, which was 1752 less than during February last year.

But there was another rise in Universal Credit (UC) claims made across North Lanarkshire last month.

As of March 10, a total of 32,496 people put in UC claims - a rise of 241 on the previous month.

Helen Hanlon, Jobseekers' employer and partnership manager for North Lanarkshire, said: "We’re continuing to work with local employers, offering them a bespoke and tailored recruitment service within our jobcentres.

"We recently worked in collaboration with partners Skills Development Scotland for a sector-wide job fair and the Scottish Government for an adult social carer recruitment event in Motherwell to assist the shortage in the social care sector, where care organisations and partners attended to promote their vacancies.

"Following on from this, we have a second adult social care event planned for Wednesday, May 11, in Motherwell Concert Hall.”

Minister for Employment, Mims Davies MP, added: “With the UK unemployment rate returning to the lowest we have seen in nearly 50 years, it is clear our Plan for Jobs has worked - protecting livelihoods and businesses throughout the pandemic.

“Behind these ONS figures we know this is a difficult time for many workers and families.

"We’re doing everything we can to help, with our Way to Work scheme which is supporting people coming through the doors of our job centres to move into better paid, higher skilled work, as well as increasing the National Living and Minimum Wage, all backed up by over £22 billion of targeted investment."
