Year of roadworks planned near Temple Meads as work to upgrade gas pipes gets underway

Motorists in Bristol have been warned to expect delays in the Temple Quay area as £1m worth of investment works to upgrade gas pipes are due to get underway next week. Wales & West Utilities will be undertaking the overhaul, which it says is essential to keep the gas flowing safely to local homes and businesses while also making sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.

From February 6, Wales & West say there will be disruption on Feeder Road and Avon Street. The company says it has agreed to a traffic management plan with Bristol City Council that will involve traffic lights and road closures.

Traffic lights will be in place along Feeder Road at its junction with St Anne’s Road from February 6, and a road closure will also be put in place at its junctions with Arlington Road and Newbridge Road. Wales & West say that a diversion will be signposted; however, motorists travelling through the area have been warned to expect delays and allow extra travelling time.

The plan is to reopen the road with three-way traffic lights by the end of March 2023, when work will continue along Feeder Road towards Barton Hill Bridge, where lane closures and rolling traffic lights will be in place.

A spokesperson for Wales & West said that work on Avon Street will begin later in the year and into 2024, with more information expected closer to the time.

Wales & West Utilities Operation Manager for Bristol, Christopher Mutlow, said: “We’re working in the Temple Quay area of Bristol to upgrade the gas network. This work is part of a £1m investment in the area and will keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

“In agreement with Bristol City Council, and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, traffic management will be in place throughout the project.

“Traffic lights will be in place along Feeder Road at its junction with St Anne’s Road from 06 Feb. A road closure will also be put in place at its junctions with Arlington Road and Newbridge Road. A diversion route will be clearly signposted however, we would advise road users to take alternative routes if at all possible. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will reopen the road with three-way traffic lights by the end of March (2023).

“We will then continue our work along Feeder Road towards Barton Hill Bridge, where lane closures and rolling traffic lights will be in place.

"We are sorry for the disruption our work is causing, and we are doing everything we can to keep the traffic flowing safely. We appreciate that working on roads such as these is not ideal, but this work really is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future."
